High Force Waterfall can be found in the spectacular countryside in Upper Teesdale. The area has been awarded as the first in England to accomplish European and global Geopark recognition, with the objective of protecting the location’s exclusive geodiversity.
High Force Waterfall
With its origins dating back over 300 million years where the River Tees begins high on the fells as a mere trickle, the river gathers pace, and then plunges over 21 metres into the gorge below to a plunge pool with a mass of whirling water. You will hear the roar of the waterfall well before you actually see it. It is an amazing sight to behold, with a viewing platform right at the very base of the waterfall.
The waterfall is accessed by a woodland walk of approximate 1/3 of a mile along a well maintained gravel footpath, which is also suitable for wheelchair users. Bench seating is provided along the pathway at intervals.
High Force is often mistaken as the highest waterfall in England but this isn’t so; as Cautley Spout, boasting a single 76 metre drop in the Yorkshire Dales, or the Howgill Fells waterfall in Cumbria, at a total height of 180 metres, could well be among the highest. High Force however, is the largest waterfall by sheer volume of water.
Teesdale is the most southerly of the Durham Dales. Around the Teesdale region you will come across the perfect mix of culture, local food, shopping, adventure and open spaces. Experience the vibrant market towns of Middleton in Teesdale and Barnard Castle, and encounter many pretty villages.
Middleton in Teesdale is known as the capital of the upper Dales region and offers an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding countryside. The headquarters of the London Lead Mining Company established its headquarters in Middleton, Teesdale in 1815, and the influence can be seen in many of the town’s buildings, symbolising late Victorian prosperity. On the southern side of the river, at the cattle market, local farmers still sell their cattle and sheep to this day with sales of Swaledale rams attracting buyers from far and wide.
