For the Historians

Berwick has a stormy past. It was captured and plundered 13 times before it fell into the hands of the English around 1482. The Elizabethan town walls were constructed to keep the Scots from invading the town. It’s possible to walk around the full circuit of the walls enjoying amazing views of the estuary of the River Tweed, the 3 bridges of Berwick and the surrounding countryside.

The artist, JS Lowry was a constant visitor to the region and today you can follow in his footsteps on the Lowry Trail. Rachel Joyce, the worldwide, bestselling author has set her latest book in the area – The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy.   There are museums at The Main Guard and Berwick Barracks where you can delve into the past history of Berwick, or perhaps take a tour of the old jail lockups, or the town’s courtroom at Berwick Town Hall.

For the Families

Berwick upon Tweed offers plenty of fun-filled activities for swimming, soft play, splash park and beach playtimes, with organised holiday events in Berwick Parks and in Berwick Museum. Having several cliff top walks, cycle routes and long sandy beaches, including the promenade at Spittal, Berwick features a whole range of activities and attractions for the family.

The Maltings in the centre of the town, not far from the Scottish Border, has a magnificent programme of events throughout the year. They offer the very best in family entertainment, community events, dance, opera, music, classical concerts, children’s shows, comedy theatre and movies, plus a traditional Christmas season pantomime.
