Discover the Dicovery Museum

For those with a love of history, the Discovery Museum is Newcastle favorite. This award-winning, free museum was founded in 1934 and has evolved into a large, 3-floor attraction of models, exhibits, world-firsts and inventions that will entertain those of any age.

One of the largest attractions at the Discovery Museum is the Turbinia, the first steam turbine-powered steamship which was built as an experimental vessel in 1894. This ship was by far the fastest of its time and revolutionized the maritime industry. At 32 metres long, you can’t miss this awe-inspiring piece of history adorning the central hall of the museum.

Hands-on science projects will delight the kids while the adults will revel in the fascinating facts about Newcastle and Tyneside. From Arts & Culture to People & Places to inventions of the modern world, the Discovery Museum is a must-see on any static caravan holiday. A brilliant addition to any holiday.

Day or Night: The Kielder Observatory

Visitors will never view the skies the same again after seeing them from the Kielder Observatory, a world class facility for astronomy by all accounts. Opened in 2008, the observatory receives about 20K visitors a year to its small classroom and then out onto its viewing decks for the best dark skies throughout the UK or Europe.

Northumberland Park having achieved the recognition of Dark-sky status in 2013, this 1500 sq km area is the largest area of protected sky in this part of the world. Light pollution control allows viewers to see billions of stars that most have never seen even a fraction of before!

With a wide range of telescopes, including solar telescopes for daytime observing during the summer months, the observatory hosts those of all ages for several hours each night, all year round. The facility has special events aimed at children, late night family events and relaxed astronomy. Viewers may also choose a night that focuses on the moon or planets.
